How do we identify domain ownership?

Domain ownership is confirmed by performing a WHOIS lookup. The WHOIS lists a “Registrant”, which is considered the owner of the domain.

WHOIS services provide public access to data on registered domain names, which currently includes contact information for Registered Name Holders. Visit ICANN to perform a WHOIS lookup.

If your domain is still available
If your domain is still available to be purchased or if you have not registered your domain, register the domain (you may choose any registrar). Then, contact customer support so that we may confirm your domain registration.

If your domain is privately blocked
If your domain registration is privately blocked from the public, please allow the Domain Registrant information to be made publicly available until your certificate request has been completed.  You can contact your domain registrar to arrange for your organization name to appear while we approve your domain.

If you do not wish to make the information publicly available, see options below.

No WHOIS database
If your domain is registered with an extension that does not provide a WHOIS database, ask your registrar to provide an official letter confirming the current Registrant (owner) information. The letter and email must come directly from the registrar to customer support.

Why do I need to update the domain registration?

If your organization owns the domain listed in your order, update the domain Registrant with your domain Registrar to show your organization’s registered, legal name.

For example, if ABC Corporation owns the domain listed in the order, the domain Registrant must be updated to show ABC Corporation as the Registrant.

How can the domain be approved without updating the domain registration?

If your organization does not own the domain listed in your order, options are available below.

Verbally with the domain Registrant
We will call the Registrant, Administrative or Technical Contact listed on the WHOIS to verbally confirm that your organization have the right to use the domain.

Online with the domain Registrant
We will send an online Domain Rights Confirmation request to:

  • The Registrant, Administrative or Technical Contact listed on the WHOIS
  •  An allowable email alias at the enrolling domain name, such as:
    • admin
    • administrator
    • hostmaster
    • webmaster
    • postmaster

If you have any questions, contact customer support.
